The first week of the Cwmffwrn 2026 dig has gone well. We’ve had over 30 participants join us and have seen excellent progress.
During Week 2, we will be exploring important areas of the platform house. The central area is still stone covered, and we think it may be where the hearth was located, as well as a central internal wall that may have separated the house from the byre. We’ll also be digging into the end of the platform to reveal the original land surface it was built on – something we need to achieve to enable the OSL Dating to be undertaken mid-week.
We know that we will need a specialist pottery report, given the increasing number of medieval and early post-medieval sherds now filling our finds trays! And we anticipate that we will need a radiocarbon date from the lower layers of the hearth we expect to reveal.
Our crowdfunder is still open, and we ask kindly for further support to help us achieve these aims. Trysor are donating most of their time on site this year, with other costs being met by the participants paying for experience days or trainee weeks.
